Origin of orange fruit
Today, oranges are everywhere from beverages to confectionery, and everything in between. So much that we tend to forget they have exotic origins.
It seems that the first tree bloomed in the Southeast China region. The fruits, known as wild orange or bitter orange, were nearly inedible at the time. The sweet variety that we all commonly use today, never grew in the wild. It was likely that the plant was produced by crossing a mandarin and a pomelo.
The edible, sweet version, started to spread in the neighbouring countries, then move to Europe and the Americas. Today, oranges are available worldwide and there is more than 400 different types of varieties.
