Is black truffle a mushroom?
Technically, they are not the same species as mushrooms grow above the ground whereas black truffles grow underneath the surface.
Truffles are tubers and they exist in several varieties, mainly black and white, depending on the season. Truffles grow in a symbiotic relationship with tree roots, especially in damp areas. Hence, they are considered a rare culinary treat as they cannot be planted.
